Gabrielle "Gabby" Angelou (Granny)
I loved writing this character, and her book, Gabby's Journal, is my favorite of the entire series. She emerged as what I believe my great-grandmother was like, based on the treasured memories I have of her.
Even this image resembles her to some extent. She raised me until I was four, when she died, having slipped and fallen down a few stairs. And yet, she remained one of the strongest influences of my life.
I want to be this granny.
Gabrielle,
Known simply as Granny to those she loves, Gabrielle "Gabby" Angelou is the quiet heart of the Children of Light series.
Her life spans more than sixty years after the Rapture, carrying readers from fear and spiritual rebellion to unwavering faith and extraordinary hope. Through loss, hardship, and countless trials, Gabby becomes a woman whose greatest strength lies not in power or position but in her steadfast trust in God.
As a young woman, Gabby is impulsive, independent, and determined to live life on her own terms. The sudden disappearance of her family during the Rapture shatters her world and forces her to confront the truth she once rejected. What begins as a personal journal to process grief gradually becomes a testimony of God's faithfulness, preserving both history and hope for future generations.
Gentle, compassionate, and quietly courageous, Gabby devotes her life to protecting those she loves, especially her beloved granddaughter Emma. Her wisdom is born not from perfection but from a lifetime of learning to trust God's promises, even when she cannot understand His plans. She teaches that true strength is found in obedience, humility, and perseverance.
More than a beloved grandmother, Gabby is the spiritual foundation upon which the Children of Light story is built—a faithful LightBearer whose legacy continues to guide others long after her own journey draws to its close.
She is who I want to be... when I grow up.
Blessings,
Jana
